The day started on a practical note: after breakfast we met a friend of my wife’s who helped us with a few matters involving Singpass (Singapore’s digital identity system). Afterwards we set off together for the modern district of Punggol.
Punggol: Singapore’s most modern face
We were amazed as soon as we arrived. This district feels completely different from Singapore’s other neighbourhoods. Everything here is consistently modern, almost futuristic. Punggol is known for its “Smart Nation” initiatives and the perfect integration of housing, technology and nature.
The waterway of the future: High-tech, nature and quality of life combined
If you want to see what the city of the future looks like, look to Singapore – more precisely, to the Punggol Digital District on the north-east coast of the city-state. A former fishing village has become a state-of-the-art “eco-town” that shows how rapid growth, environmental protection and the highest quality of life can complement each other perfectly.
Why “digital”?
The whole district is run by a central digital operating system called the “Open Digital Platform” (ODP). This is what makes it so special:
• Everything is connected: More than 20,000 sensors collect data in real time across the district. The different building systems communicate directly with each other. For example, when the security system recognises you at the entrance, it can automatically call the lift and tell you where to go.
• Artificial intelligence & robots: Cameras and sensors control lighting and air-conditioning according to demand to save huge amounts of energy. There are autonomous delivery robots and smart car parks with number-plate recognition. In the shopping mall, for example, there is a sushi restaurant where robots serve the food.
• The “digital twin”: An exact 3D copy of the entire district exists on the computer. Companies can test new technologies there virtually before they are used in real life.
• Focus on the tech industry: The office towers mainly attract companies working in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and financial technology (fintech).
Technology that serves people
What makes Punggol Coast so unique is not the technology alone, but how it improves daily life. Digitalisation here is not an end in itself and not just a gimmick.
It delivers concrete results: massive energy savings, efficient processes and an extremely green, safe environment.
The 15-minute city in practice
At the same time, the neighbourhood was built consistently around people’s needs. Working in state-of-the-art offices, studying at the university right on site (SIT), shopping at Punggol Coast Mall and relaxing on the green promenades along the Punggol Waterway – it all merges within a very small area. Thanks to the dense network of walking and cycling paths (park connectors), the next trip into nature, such as to nearby Coney Island, is only a few minutes away.
Conclusion: Achievable visions instead of castles in the air

Punggol Coast impressively proves that hard engineering, dense development and nature-oriented spaces are not mutually exclusive. It is a living showcase project that shows that constructive, technology-friendly and green urban planning already works today. A benchmark for urban development worldwide.

Climate protection you can feel in your wallet: with government “Climate Vouchers”, households in Singapore save up to 400 dollars when buying certified energy-efficient appliances. A smart incentive instead of rigid bans.

The 15-minute city in reality: the Punggol Digital District combines business (office towers), education (SIT university), housing and leisure in a very small area. Everything is within walking distance or smartly connected.

Green arteries instead of grey concrete: A dense network of green paths (park connectors) links the urban centre seamlessly with nature reserves such as Coney Island.

Seamless mobility: Bus and rail hubs are built right into the neighbourhoods to make living without your own car as easy and comfortable as possible.

Instant water heaters (KDK, Protek, Ariston) with the yellow energy labels
• Electrifying everyday life: state-of-the-art instant water heaters with the best energy rating (4 ticks) replace old gas boilers and make homes independent of fossil fuels.
It is fascinating to see how Singapore is making the vision of a “living city by the water” come true here – one that combines technology and quality of life.
That was it for the day.
