Powerful Thinking in the City of the Future

I am standing in the heart of Singapore’s business district, right in front of OUE Bayfront. Around me the glass giants rise into the sky, and the pace of the city is almost tangible. But in the middle of this ultra-modern setting I come across a figure that captivates me at once: The Thinker by Auguste Rodin.

The work of the mind

While the world around him is being digitalised and built at the speed of light, this massive bronze figure remains in complete physical concentration. It fascinates me how Rodin portrayed thinking not as quiet dreaming but as real, muscular work. Every sinew is tense – a symbol of the strength it takes to develop true visions.

From bronze to strategy

In my projects, such as analysing the multi-barrier strategy or comparing Passau and Singapore, I keep coming across exactly this need. Whether it is about building polders on Pulau Tekong or digital forecasting models: behind every technological solution there is first a person who pauses and understands the problem down to the smallest detail.

“Thinking is not passive. It is the effort of building tomorrow’s world in your mind’s eye today.”

An anchor for the times ahead

For me, this statue here in Singapore is more than just art. It is an anchor. It reminds us that in the times ahead we need this depth more than ever. In a world full of quick answers, “The Thinker” is a symbol of the perseverance we need for sustainable solutions – whether in flood protection or in designing lively urban spaces.
