The National Stadium in the heart of the Singapore Sports Hub is far more than just a sports venue – it is a prime example of Singapore’s power of innovation. With a capacity of 55,000 seats for football matches, it not only offers an impressive setting but also uses its limited space as efficiently as possible thanks to retractable seating. This way, fans can sit closer to the pitch for football, while space is made for the running track at athletics events.
1. Engineering at the highest level

The stadium impresses with the world’s largest free-spanning dome roof, which can be opened or closed depending on the weather. This kind of “hard engineering” ensures that major events can take place in any weather. An innovative ventilation system also keeps temperatures pleasant by directing cool air straight under the seats – highly efficient and much more economical than conventional air-conditioning.
2. The stadium as a “giant rain funnel”
In a city that often struggles with tropical downpours, the 312-metre-wide dome acts as a huge catchment basin. The water management system follows the “sponge city” principle:
• Collect & store: Every drop is caught by a complex system of gutters at the outer edges of the dome, filtered and stored in huge underground tanks.
• Sustainable use: This water is reused directly on site, for example to water the green spaces and to flush the toilets throughout the complex.
• Flood protection: Because the roof acts as a buffer, it prevents the city’s drainage from overflowing immediately during cloudbursts.
3. Efficient cooling with water
Part of the water management feeds directly into the building’s energy efficiency. The system uses highly efficient water cooling circuits as heat exchangers to lower the air temperature in the stadium by around 15% without massive power consumption.
The National Stadium impressively shows how Singapore combines architecture, sustainability and highly efficient use of space to be ready for the challenges of the future.
