On this day, sightseeing took a back seat completely. The news about the political situation in Iran and the closure of several airports in the Middle East – including Abu Dhabi – made us worried about our flight home.
Organising things through the interpreter service

Because we had no Wi-Fi at home, we went to Starbucks. With a stable connection, I could make important phone calls through a sign language interpreter using the service „Tess“. I asked both my travel agent and Etihad Airways directly what would happen in case of rebooking or cancellation.
The result of the calls:
- Etihad remains responsible: If the airline cancels the flight, they have to take care of rebooking us and getting us home.
- Wait and see: My travel agent advised me to wait for the airline’s reaction first. As long as the flight is not officially cancelled, we stay calm.
- Current status: Our flight is still confirmed. Now we are keeping our fingers crossed that the journey home can go ahead as planned.
Switching off with some shopping
To take our minds off things a little, we went shopping afterwards. We bought a few things that my wife would like to take back to Germany as souvenirs. We didn’t want to do anything big that day, because our heads were simply somewhere else.
It was a day of waiting and hoping, but we stay optimistic!
